Pretty in Pink

Rose Retreat 2018 in the Rose Valley of Bulgaria

Pretty in Pink: Rose Harvest 2018 in the Rose Valley of Bulgaria

I recently attended a rose retreat in the Rose Valley of Bulgaria near the town of Kazanlak.  Silvia of Rose Overdose (https://www.roseoverdose.com) invited me and she was the most gracious host I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Her family has been harvesting roses and producing rose oil, and other rose infused products for generations. It was a rose jam packed week of rose picking, rose yoga, rose workshops, and rose dinners. I would like to give a shout out to my friend, Nicole Santos of Gallery Rosa in Todos Santos, Baja California Sur who trusted me and said "YES", to join as a travel buddy for the adventure.

We visited a rose distillery, a rose museum, and the tombs of great Thoracian kings. Bulgaria was a culturally infused place with influence from Slovic, Russian, Arabian, Turkish, and Grecian civilizations. Driving through the romantic rose valley there was nothing but rose gardens for miles. What I liked about these gardens is many were unattended, growing wild, free, engrossed in their natural state and the flowers covered the land what seemed to go on for an eternity.  The constant rose aroma opened my gypsy heart to a portal of another realm. Those that know the power of one sniff of rose can only image what it felt like to be amidst the aroma for week. it was constant. Rose notes even began to show up in my under arm odor. My essence infused with e rose essence.

Blends Well With: Bergamot, cardamom, geranium, ginger, jasmine, lemon, neroli, patchouli, sandalwood, vetiver, and frankincense

Rose Yoga

We kicked off our stay in the valley of roses with a once in a lifetime chance to practice in a studio that was filled with over 3000 roses. There was even an unexpected photographer there from national geographic to capture some images of our group doing "rose yoga". This was never really done before Silvia designed the concept and just so happened to take a day's harvest of here 40 acre farm to let us play in roses. My favorite was making "rose angels" (like when you lay back in the snow and make snow angels but with roses)

There is a reason why the rose has been used for centuries by lovers as a symbol of the heart. The oil is a gentle tonic for the heart w/ the highest measured frequency of all oils at 320 MHz. The rose garden itself is a living meditation w/ an endless sea of blossoms where the opening of petals never seemed to end.. Rose helps us to find the softness underneath it all, while helping to open our hearts a little more and experience a deep sense of peace, love, and joy. The many layers of this scent reminds of our “journey” not just the destination. This aroma is a gift of the earth bringing wisdom to those who have built walls around the heart. Breathe in this heavenly scent and get ready to receive.

Beauty Ritual, Goddesses, and Roses

These three themes go hand in hand as rose elixir’s have been recorded in written history dating back 5000 years. Rose is also known as  “THE QUEEN of FLOWERS” Both in India, Egypt, Roman and Arabic writings deities, queens, and goddess are associated with the rose. The greek poet, Anacreon wrote that the white rose (Alba species) first sprang forth during the birth of  Aphrodite, the goddess of love.Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt was known for her beauty and one of her most famous recipes was her bath consisting of honey, milk, and roses. She even had her living quarters filled with petals so that when Marc Anthony met her he would long remember her every time he smelled a rose.

Whether dealing with libido, mood, or post natal issues working with rose oils can support healthy sexual and female challenges. Try taking Cleopatra’s lead and soak in a milk, honey and rose oil bath to support healthy hormonal function and uplift the mood.Rose has therapeutic compounds that are specifically regenerating to mature skin. The oil also benefits dry, hormonal, and problematic skin issues.

Rose Oil Production

About 60,000 roses are used to produce 1 ounce of Rose Oil. This is about 7000-9000 kilos of petals in 1 liter of rose oil, or 30 kilos in just 1 gram! I recently had the pleasure to visit a 10 acre rose garden in the Rose Valley of Bulgaria. My friend, Silvie who invited me is carrying on the art of rose growing as did her family for generations. The entire rose harvest lasts around 3 weeks and begins mid May. Each morning the rose pickers, which many whom are “gypsies” wake up before the Sun to start picks by 5 AM- 10AM. When it begins to warm up the roses with begin to ferment so the day’s harvest goes right to the distillery which is nearby to be steam distilled into oil. 10 pickers will pick around 300 kilos of blossoms in a morning. One picker is needed per acre.

After rose picking one morning our group visited the Rose distillery. The exotic aroma that filled the air was one like no other. My nose captured rich notes of sultry smoke, earthy tobacco, tart fruit, fresh green, hint of citrus, and heavy floral aromatics. Yes, it was intoxicating and I finally understood the meaning of Silvia’s brand, Rose Overdosed! It was almost like being drunk on roses but that was another night of the retreat!

Rose Museum & Dinner

So far I have shared Aromatic and Topical ways to use the essence of the rose  but there are also internal uses through culinary delights. My favorite evening in Bulgaria was a Rose dinner hosted in Silvia’s family home. Her family had been making Rose Champagne, Rose Wine, and Rose Liqueurs for generations. Each sip was savored like a drop of love straight to the soul. The dinner also included a salad with edible roses, Bulgarian Cheeses with Rose Jam, Rose Risotto, and Rose Sorbet. In between each coarse we sipped on the beverages and got to smell different rose oils produced by different seasons or growers which of coarse effect the notes. Rose water, rose petal infusions and rose oil were all bases to the culinary delights. Earlier in the day we also got a surprise treat of sipping rose champagne on pink carpet in the gardens of the rose museum of Kazanlak.

Recipe: Rose Petal Jam

3 1/2 cups of water

3 cups of rose petals

2 1/2 cups of sugar

½ cup of fresh lemon juice

1 cup rose water

Bring the water to a boil in a medium saucepan and stir in the rose water. Remove from heat.

Add petals, cover,  and steep for 30 mins. Strain liquid. Discard petals.  Add the rest of the ingredients and bring to a boil for 4 minutes. Remove from heat and transfer into a hot mason jar to seal the lid.  Let cool. And store in a cool, dry place. Refrigerate after opening.

Thracian Tombs

The Thracian people were from the Odrysian kingdom an ancient, mysterious tribe with elaborate burial rituals who drank wine from gold cups, built structures to withstand the test of time, treasured their horses, and didn't bother to write anything down living in the moment.  I chanted in the Golyama Kosmatka Tomb of King Seuth to checkout the acoustical value 9while making a prayer wish and sending it out there in the universe somewhere. and thought Droko of the  known Dothraki (nomadic horse-mounted warriors from Game of thrones) was going to rise from the grave in which we were sitting. I instantly felt a weird , creepy, but powerful vibe and fled out of there quickly.  I will tell you within a few weeks my wish that I had made in the tomb came true but maybe that also had to do with the power of the roses.

Rose Picking

Last but not least, my favorite activity was being out in the gardens picking the roses. A divine process it was! The scent though! Nirvana accessed right from the nose.  Silvia likes to call it "A living meditation".  The roses had the company of many bees, and wild flowers growing under the rose bushes including flowers springing up from two very precious essential oils Helichrysum and Tansy.  We also learned how to make mega flower crowns. Here is a magical moment in the garden while I was picking a local girl sang a beautiful song. I could not hold back the tears and forever more I will be looking at the world with as pair of rose colored lenses.

Please contact me if you may be interested in attending one of Silvia's retreat or would like to inquire about purchasing some of her wonderful rose oil or rose water.

H2O the Giver of Life and EO's to the Rescue

Water Wellness and Cellular Heath

We all know drinking an adequate amount of water is crucial to good health. Besides aiding in digestion, circulation, and excretion, H2O  is also the key to healthy, glowing radiant skin.

IMG_2375.PNG

Dr Imre Nagy was one of the pioneer scientists out there to go deeper in to the study of aging diving into Dr. Harman's Free Radical Theory of Aging (FRTA) (which came out prior) stating that organisms age because cells accumulate free radical damage over time. A free radical is any atom or molecule that has a single unpaired electron in an outer shell. Nagy presented his “Membrane Hypothesis of Aging” in 1978. Simply he found that when a cell's water supply is pushed out the cell becomes dehydrated. Cell dehydration = cell oxidation which speeds the aging process causing wrinkles, inflammation, and disease.

The good new was Nagy found that the cells could be repaired if there was a substance that could penetrate the hardened, cell membrane wall which was designed to not let just anything pass. The cell membrane has a job is to protect the crucial nucleus and our sensitive DNA make up at it's center. Dr. Nagy found that Antioxidants were the key the key to this repair but not just any antioxidants. They had to be a lipid soluble substance to pass through the cell wall. The more free radicals present, the harder the cell wall.

Vitamin C for example is like a jump starter to our immune system but it is not lipid soluble. Only water soluble. Essential oils, on the the other hand are like magic to our cell because they are both lipid soluble and some of the most powerful antioxidants out there.

Just to put into perspective how strong the essential oils are as antioxidants check this out. Blueberries and pomegranates are both wonderful fruits known to be highly antioxidant "superfoods" rating around a 5000 score on the ORAC scale which is a measure of radical absorption capacity or antioxidant power. Many of the essential oils rate in the in the one hundred thousands with clove oil being the heaviest hitter rating in at over a million!

Since EO's are so supportive to our cellular health this is my favorite reason I love to use them.  I incorporate essential oils into both my daily skin care routine while using them topically and using carrier oils such as coconut oil to carry them even deeper into my my body since fatty oils are also lipid soluble. Besides drinking lots of water I had a couple of drops of therapeutic grade lemon, lime or wild orange essential oil for extra flushing and detox. I would NEVER take an essential oil internally if sold off the shelf in a store. These smell great and may even say "therapeutic" but they are not for internal use.I would also NEVER buy off of Amazon (since you don't know the true source and people tamper there to extend the quantity. It's not rocket science to reseal at lid.). Not all EO brands are created equal. Many are cut w/ synthetic and toxic compounds or have little to no therapeutic properties due to improper growing, sourcing, and distilling practices. I trust one valid source for internal use (though there may be more out there) because of there strict protocol for ethical sourcing, growing, harvesting, distilling, rigid testing, and supporting of indigenous agriculture communities . Do your own research here at https://sourcetoyou.com

If you would like to also learn more I offer a free 30 min. consultation with samples to introduce you to the many ways essential oils can support your health. Please contact me at kristen@elegantsavage.com

Sacred Sap on the Spice Coast

It was almost like a week of Panchakarma, a powerful Ayurvedic treatment that eliminates toxicity, restoring the body’s natural balance and health minus the enema.

It's been a while since I have posted. Let's just say I have been taking a sabbatical to nourish and heal while learning new skills to help others also grow in wellness. It all began when I was researching Ayurvedic Wellness Counselor training programs last Fall and was getting ready to send my payment off to enroll in a program when I stumbled upon James Bailey's Sevanti Institute and his "Sacred Sap Retreat" in India where I made a change in coarse. www.sevanti.com

bronze vessel called a "kindi" used to hold medicinal milk in a ksheeradara treatment

bronze vessel called a "kindi" used to hold medicinal milk in a ksheeradara treatment

James is a third generation physician, Ayurveda and Oriental Medicine practitioner, Yoga educator, and Yoga teacher trainer who has been living yoga and ayurveda for 30 years. It was fate as I have been waiting for that "perfect" teacher and/or scenario to make my long awaited journey to India! I instantly enrolled in the Sacred Sap Retreat and this adventure on the Malabar or Spice Coast of Kerala in Southwestern India has been epic, balls to the walls awesome to say the least. This blog post (1 of 2 because I will tell my tales of the North in another post) is a memoir of my multi-faceted trip which was beyond words. I hope to share a bit of my Ayurvedic week long replenishing while also encouraging others to catch the next Seventi Adventures "Sacred Sap" Retreat.

What is the "Sacred Sap" you may ask? Ayurvedic regeneration of the body’s cells, tissues and healthy aging is known as rasayana. The rasayana view of ayurveda describes a sacred sap or juice (ojas, rasa) within us that when preserved (not depleted) defines our youthfulness, vitality, health, and longevity. So I was off to Somatheeram, the worlds first Ayurvedic Resort south of Kovalom in the state of Kerala, India to receive daily 90 minute Ayurvedic Rejuvenation Massage sessions and study Ayurveda. The trained therapists massage with copious amounts of these warm sacred oils all over the body. The ojas rich oils and herbs are absorbed into the tissues through the skin and begin the process of tissue repair and regeneration. It's the practice of "Youthing"! Diet also plays a huge role and all meals at Somatheeram were designed to be deeply nourishing to the body. I forgot about all of this goodness though upon arrival as my senses were swept away by the beauty of the setting.

I arrived at the resort around 3 AM so it was dark and I could not see very much of anything but that did not matter. I was intoxicated by the scent of jasmine right away and also offered a necklace of the blossoms strung together.  The exotic songs of birds of this paradise created an orchestra of wild. As soon as I would get lost in their song the strong fierce shore breaking waves of the Arabian Sea rumbled my being. This ocean song seemed to guide me along.

I was taken to my room which was actually someone else room. In India it doesn't seem matter. There was a woman who was in a deep sleep before the concierge banged on her door to let her know I was coming in. There was only one bed, and both the woman and I were both very confused but too jet lagged and lost in translation to deal so I hopped in bed w/ this stranger. (It turned out she was my roomie the entire retreat but paid extra the first night for her own room so she was not expecting me at all.)

She turned out to be the best India roomie and played her own part in my healing as she was such a nourishing sweet soul and fellow Portlandian. I laid there that first night in shock that my dream of traveling to India had come true. My head started to fill with anxiety from my life left behind in the western world (Is my daughter okay? Are the dogs okay? Is my house flooding again like it did just weeks before?) Then these powerful crashing waves would wash everything away demanding my emptiness from within. My shift in perception as well as my healing experience in this paradise can be described as the peeling of an onion.

Layer by layer whether it was a smell, a sound, a puja, receiving an ass kicking treatment, Tawny's restorative yoga class, bathing an elephant, swimming in the Arabian sea, or catching a smile from one of the beautiful indigenous Indian souls on the beach I was opened up to my core. It was like I met myself for the first time. This was confirmed by my longtime yoga teacher Nicole back home. For when she greeted me for the first time upon my return she said "It is so nice to finally meet you"!

I usually get home sick as I miss my daughter, our dogs, and my comfy bed when so I don't like to travel but this time I did not want to leave. The nice thing about the trip was we still had an additional week up North so I got to sink into my newly emerged Self for a while before leaving. James specifically curates the adventure like this so we can be supported in a shift through so much healing from the treatments etc, then hit the spiritual sites up north like Varanasi, the City of Light or the Taj, the Temple of Love and really be blown away.

It was almost like a week of Panchakarma, a powerful Ayurvedic treatment that eliminates toxicity, restoring the body’s natural balance and health minus the enema. Here is a list of some of the treatments I received during my week in Kerala and a thousand thanks to my therapist Revathi. Out of the 50 pairs of sandals or so left on the steps outside of the Ayurvedic center she always went right to mine (while I drank my ,dedicated ghee) and handed them over quickly for our jaunt to our treatment room down this botanical path. She would help me undress then light a candle and begin with a prayer in Sanskrit.  Revathi would start massaging my head then the rest of my body from there. She was so tiny but so strong. There were little things I had to submit my OCD ways (besides traffic) to like the rosewood stool where she would have me sit. Though we would wear these paper panties during treatment I wondered how many other greasy butts had sat in the stool that day. Also, it was interesting to have my boobs and fat rolls also massaged but that is why it is traditional to only have female therapists work on female clients. It wasn't sexual at all but just part of the holistic experience to really get the blood moving and the toxins flushed out. On a side note I about died laughing when I saw one of the wild, exotic birds flying away like a thief in the night with a pair of those awful paper panties. They were more like diapers.

Going in I thought this would be a once in a lifetime experience but instead I hope to return on a regular basis to receive this kind of sweet rejuvenation and restore my own sacred sap!

MY TREATMENT LIST:

Shirodhara is an Ayurvedic treatment which involves slowly pouring herbal liquids over a client’s forehead, exactly to the middle spot of the forehead. Shirodhara is composed of two words, which have their base in the Sanskrit language. The word Shiro means head and the word dhara means flow. I loved this treatment and during my shirodara session there was a nearby church on the grounds where there were children singing in a choir. Epic.

Pizhichil is a synchronized massage of up and down is carried out on all parts of the body by two therapists.  No area of the body is left uncovered. Here, cloth dipped in lukewarm medicated oil is squeezed over the patient’s body uniformly and then the oil rubbed smoothly over the body of the patient by masseurs on either side. The session may take 1 hour including continuous oil pouring over the body, then rubbing and stimulating the skin using hands and special cotton cloths.

Njavarakizhi or Kizhi is a deeply invigorating massage, involves fomentation of the body with a bolus of cooked rice. Njavara is a particular kind of rice known for its nutritional and therapeutic value. It is cooked with milk and a herbal decoction made of kurumthotti.

Abhyanga is a warm oil massage administered as part of preparatory measure of Panchakarma treatment in Ayurveda. “Abhyanga” means to move energy into the body to pull out toxins from the body.

Udvarthanam is a massage using herbal powder. The treatment is good for diseases like diabetic neuropathy, paralysis, obesity, skincare, sciatica, indigestion and sclerosis of blood vessels. The massage activates the nerves and increases blood flow to the impaired parts of the body. Udvarthanam is also an important health preserving massage. As the massage promotes active blood flow, it revitalizes and reconditions the body, thus preserving its strength, skin texture, and natural elasticity. Fat reduction is one of the significant benefits in cases of obesity.

'Thriphala', is the most commonly used powder in the treatment. It is a mixture of excellent nerve stimulating agents such as Gooseberry, Belerica, and Myrobalan. The medicated powder is applied all over the body and massage is done in the opposite direction of the hair roots, with appropriate pressure.

Nasyam: Ghee or oil is used in Marshya Nasyam. It is a symptomatic treatment which helps in overcoming symptoms of certain diseases.

Ksheeradara is the treatment where by the lukewarm medicated milk is made to flow in a slow constitend rate for a particular duration mostly over the glabellar region or the whole body with simultaneous soft massage. This therapy is highly beneficial for vata and pita predominant headaches, stress, insomnia and anxiety. It nourishes the skin and gives a lustrous appearance. It has proven effective in certain cases of arthritis. In certain neurological conditions especially those accompanied by burning sensation and numbness.  For ksheera dhara treatment traditional bronze vessel called ‘kindi’ is used.

Lepanam is one of the effective datum of Ayurveda to eliminate skin ailments and certain remedies in Ayurveda enlarges amazing power within to control and prevent every kind of dermatological complaints.

Scent Science

Essential oils have therapeutic properties that can support one's greater health and wellbeing well beyond the nose. Though this modality may have sounded a little hippy dippy to certain individuals,  essential oils are actually gaining acceptance being heavily researched in a multitude of studies for their various benefits. This is not just woo woo, smell good stuff, but complex chemistry that goes way beyond just scent.

The bark, stem, flower, root, or leaf parts of a given plant can be harvested and extracted into an essential oil. These essential oil extracts are actually the defense, immune, or protection properties of a plant. The complex "properties" are a result of evolution! As a particular plant has programmed itself to adapt and survive , up against crazy ice ages, disease, predators, and human sprawl billions of species continue to exist.  These essential oil compounds result in a plant's perfection through time.

“Have you ever touched the petal or leaf from a plant then smelled the lovely scent that rubbed off on your hand? The fragrant residue left behind is is the essential oil of the plant. ”

Modern Medicine

Harnessing the power of these plants is not a new field of science.  In fact, the "modern medicine" or the meds that doctors prescribe today is derived from plants but replicated in a lab and produced synthetically to save on cost.

We are fortunate enough to live in a time of great medical advancements. In fact America is rated #1 for trauma care. Studies show though that $4.5 trillion per year is spent in the US on health care alone yet the US is rated 52nd out of 60 for healthy people. We spend about 1/2 the worlds global health care budget in the U.S.!

“Are we healthier because of these drugs though?”

Also, the pharma drugs produced from these ancient plants as discussed from above only contain 1 or 2 of the hundreds healing compounds from a plant. This is because science is only advanced enough yet to isolate very few at a time in synthetic form. These incomplete compounds lead to drugs that may address symptoms, but lead to reactions, side effects, addictions, and have nothing to do with getting to the "root" of the problem.

Complete Whole Compounds = "Therapeutic"

On the other hand, just one natural plant extract can contain up to hundreds of constituents at a time. A therapeutic grade Helichrysum essential oil for example, which is harvested in the wild has up to 800 compounds. Modern medicine can't perfect like Mother Nature.  Nor does the Helichrysum growing in my backyard contain 800 compounds. This is because location is everything! The indigenous region specific to a plant is where it's species is going to be the most complete, super species if you will, and w / the most therapeutic value.

Aromatic Science

Natural compounds include constituents such as linalool (antibacterial, sedative, anti-fungal, antiviral), sesquiterpenes (supports healthy neurological function) and d-limolene (inhibits growth of cancer cells and highly antiviral) to name a few. Check out aromaticscience.com to access the latest comprehensive library of published scientific and peer-reviewed studies on essential oils. There is also an "Education" section to become an expert in essential oil science. www.aromaticscience.com

“So why haven’t we been using essential oils all along to support our wellness?”

No Label Laws

Historically essential oils have been used for greatly supporting the mind, body, and spirit. Unfortunately, up (until recently) there has not been a quality as safe and pure over the last century.  Most essential oil products on the market are adulterated and their production is driven by the perfume industry containing harmful chemicals like pesticides, kerosene, and diacetone alchohol. Diacetone alcohol is found in brake fluid and wood stains. There are no labeling laws so it's easy to put almost anything into an essential oil and label as "Pure".  These solvents extend the quantity of the essential oil and are odorless, and have a similar texture to the pure oil so they can go unnoticed. Yes, these toxins are sitting on the shelves of our beloved heath food stores.

Whoot Whoot

The good new is that there is an essential oil REVOLUTION happening right now!!!!!! There is an ethical source that is on a mission to change the standards of the industry completely through rigorous grow, harvest, distillation, and testing methods. This source produces oils that are so PURE many of the oils are safe for internal use and have such therapeutic effects that millions of people are catching on.

Sign up to receive more information about the safest, pure, most therapeutic grade oils that are available on the market today.
